Can a 10 gallon aquarium hold saltwater fish?
I would like to get into the saltwater fish aquarium business. I currently have had freshwater tanks for around 10 years and have alot of experience. Also around how much is having a saltwater tank going to cost?
yeah i have a ten gallon nano saltwater tank….they hold far less then freshwater…if its fish and invert only then two clowns or three gobys is all….if you have coral then one clown one damsel or 2 very small gobys would be it
here is a nano reef forum…with exsperts in keeping nano reef tanks including nano reef with fish…under 10 gallons…fish are fine in a 10 gallon

the price depends on what you want….mine 10 gallon was just an old tank i had with live sand from way out in the ocine and live rock i got free from a friend…..but with out that it would would maybe cost 150 just for the set up…if you don’t want coral
yes a 10 gallon is ok but only for certain fish. saltwater tanks can be very hard to take care of. once you get it started it gets easier but make sure you look up as much as you can before you start the tank

Hiya,
You can have a nano reef rank however this size is not suitable for fish, only crustaceans DESPITE what people here are posting! The cost of turning it into a nano reef will be so substantial that you are better off purchasing a new aquarium and getting the accessories cheaper with the deal! Not worth paying if you cant have any fish lol. I estimate it will cost $200 – $400 (£100+) to turn the tank into a marine, depending on how nice you want it to look with live rocks etc. You may think it wil;l cost you a lot less, but add it all up!
Good luck

Cost is all relevant to equipment. If you want to keep coral, then the most expensive thing will be lighting. On my 10 gallon nano I have a 24 watt daylight t5 strip with a 24 watt actinic t5 strip, and my coral are doing great. Just to give you an average idea, my light was about $80.
Saltwater is more challenging than freshwater and it would be easier to keep a larger tank like a 50 gallon as a first saltwater, but it’s definitely possible if you have the time to maintain it.
A good filter for a 10 gallon would be an aquaclear 20. Normally runs about $25.
You will need a 50 watt heater $15-$20
For a hood a $10 glass hood will work just fine.
You will only be able to keep 2-3 small gobies in that tank, along with a few snails, hermit crabs, and a cleaner shrimp.
I suggest getting 15-20 lbs of live sand and 15-20 lbs of live rock.

If you want to start a saltwater tank, ironically the bigger the tank, the easier it is to maintain. I’d suggest starting out with at least a 50gal tank. Cost is relative to many factors, so it’s hard to give you an answer on that one.
Consider what type of saltwater tank setup you’d prefer:
fish only or a reef tank (coral and some fish/inverts)
a fish only setup is the easiest to maintain and would be great for you as a beginner.
good luck to you and I hope I was a help
