You need adequate lighting and a C02 cylinder.
What advantage is there in keeping water plants in a fish aquarium?

If you have anything but sandy substrate it’s going to be a bit harder to grow plants. The gravel crushes the stems. You might be burying them too deep. The ones that you can buy in a little pot don’t get crushed as much. Packs of lily bulbs that you drop in seem to grow fairly well and the plants that grow in a bunch grow just fine unrooted, but they will eventually drop roots into the gravel. If you can’t manage to grow enough plants to keep you and your fish happy try silk plants, they’re more realistic than plastic ones and don’t die just as well.

What kind of plants were they?
It could be that they were not getting enough light, or they did not like the temperature
Here’s a great site to find out what plant will grow best in your tank!

Lighting is key. If you don’t have good fluorescent lighting it is nearly impossible to keep plants alive. You could try an iron supplement as well. Flourapride seems to work pretty well. Also, certain plants do better than others. Ask your fish store guy which plants are hardier. There are some that do pretty well even in not so good lighting.

I have used a product called Laticreite,,, not easy to find,,, but I did find it at Pet-Mart. Its suppose to be like river clay. You mix it with your gravel.,, Its there and you don’t have to do it again. I also use root stimulator tablets,,, and plant food about once every 3 months. My plants go crazy and I have to thin them out. I also use a light in my aquarium. Due to a hurricane we were without electricity for 3 weeks,,, I did not lose any fish,,, I think because of all the oxygen my plants put out. Good Luck!!
