Should I buy fish from wal mart or the local aquarium fish shop?

The local Aquarium Fish shop prices fish about 0.5-2 dollars more than the wal mart.

Where should I go for fish?

Since you are hopefuly only buying these fish once, I would spend the extra couple bucks and get them from you locally owned and operated fish store if only for principle if not for the fact that fish at these stores are usualy much better cared for and are less likely to be diseased. Wal Mart has tons of money already and can go without yours. Usualy folks who work at locally owned fish stores are much more knowledgable about their fish than are anyone at Wal Mart.

Support your locals. Local fish shops tend to take better care of their fish, seek higher quality livestock, and offer better help for those who need it. Independent fish shops are the only place I buy my fish and fish goods, and I’m more then happy to pay a bit more.

Besides, if you knew what walmart did to keep their prices on everything they sell so low, you very well might stop shopping there yourself – if you had morals.

Unless you want to very likely deal with fish loss and a wide variety of diseases go to your local pet store, yes their prices are higher but wal-mart is like the bottom rung for your fish. :( It’s sickening to walk in there and see an entire tank full of ich and there’s still someone banging on the tank, increasing the stress level for the fish.

Anyway, local pet stores usually have better service and higher quality stock (at the very least better taken care of).

Buy from local aquarium fish shop. Wal-mart is mega rich and they get away with selling sick and dying fish. The real truth is that MOST pet stores don’t gave a crap about the animals they sell. They put about 20+ goldfish in a 25-30 gallon tank! When only 2 should be in the 30 gallon tank. FIND A PET STORE THAT TRULY CARES ABOUT ITS ANIMALS AND BUY FROM THERE. NOT WAL-MART!

definitely go to your local fish store. walmart doesnt care for their products (in this case fish) like your local store would. in the long run you will find that spending that extra 2 dollars right now will pay off when your fish dont die right away. plus they’ll be so much more knowledgable and friendly. and lastly, your local fish store will definitely have a wider selection than walmart.
all in all, it sounds like the only reason you want to buy from walmart is bc of the price. if thats all you care about then fine, do it. but even then you will probably have to pay it more than once as your fish might not be completely healthy at time of purchase.

As long as you get a certificate of authenticity that the health of the fish is worthwhile, you could go to Walmart. Think on this, would you go to a swimming pool to have a doctor’s visit? Then on that point alone, you should go to a local aquarium fish store and get a certificate of authenticity from them. You need a guarantee that the fish will be well. You also need to know how long you have, before bringing an unhealthy fish back to the shop? You are an intelligent person so take these two factors in mind. Peace and God Bless.

With Wal-Mart, you are taking a big risk of buying sick fish. Chances are slim the fish will be healthy. Even if they are, the overwhelming majority of Wal-Mart fish are not. If we stop buying them and DEMAND they sell healthy fish kept in good conditions, they will either choose to do so or stop selling fish the way they do now altogether. Either way is good news for the hobby. If we support them, then they will continue selling dyed fish, poorly kept fish and sickly fish. We can’t allow them or other sloppy stores to do that. Also we can’t afford to lose quality local retailers. If it means spending an extra $2-3 on a tank full of fish, we should be OK with that.

It depends on the quality of the fish. Sometimes Wal-mart can have great fish and the same goes for local shops. Make sure you pick fish that look very healthy and active.

Also, research the common diseases of the fish you are going to buy so you can avoid getting fish that carry disease.

Definitely buy from the local guy. He would have better quality strains and be more knowledgeable about fish topics then the generic walmart person. It would support local business also.

    Look at pros and cons.
The local fish shop probably has trained professionals(or should anyway),good quality fish, and background information on the fish you buy.All only for a dollar or two more.
Almost the only pro of walmart is that it is cheaper. The last walmart I went to I looked in the fish department and they had awful looking fish, and the only thing the fish guy knew about them was how much they costed. If it were up to me walmarts wouldn’t have fish departments at all.
    But it’s your decision,hope I helped.

Your local fish shop will be staffed by caring employees who are dedicated to customer service unlike the greasy haired teenagers who could care less at Walmart.
