What are good places in Southern California to catch fish for your very own saltwater aquarium?

I am interested in starting a saltwater aquarium. Fish are expensive and since I only live half an hour from the ocean, I better take advantage of catching them to save money.

Honestly, you shouldn’t do that. It’s really bad to catch fish right from the wild and then plop them into your tank, because they WILL be stressed, and will often die once placed in captivity, they’re just not used to it. Go down to your reputable local marine fish store and buy your fish from there.

It’s true, the fish ARE expensive, but fishkeeping is an expensive hobby in itself. If you are not willing to spend the money on your fish to ensure that you are keeping them properly, then you’re not ready to an aquarium. Saltwater aquariums in general are much more expensive than a simple freshwater tank, and if you haven’t kept freshwater aquariums before, don’t be so sure you can jump right into the marine hobby!

The fish found in pet stores are tank-bred, which means that they’re used to being kept in captivity, and can live their lives that way. You can’t expect wild caught fish to thrive in an enclosure, it’s just not the way of life they’re used to.

To the person who answered above me, how the heck are you a top contributor to Fish with an answer like that? There are many local fish stores that sell wild caught fish, as well. Firstly, yeah, the wild caught fish will be stressed. That’s what quarantine tanks are for, in which you leave your newly purchased fish for up to two weeks and examine it for any diseases and let it get used to a tank.

Second, I don’t know where you can catch your own fish. You should be weary of doing this, and try your best to do it with professionals. You don’t want to catch a species that does not fare well in an aquarium, or catch species that you don’t even know how to take care of. Also, check with your local environment protection agency to see if any types of fish are illegal to fish for and take home for aquarium use. You probably will not have much luck in doing so unless you truly know what you are doing.

    Good luck!
