What kind of fish should i get for my aquarium?
Tomorrow i am going to buy a basic little fish aquarium for my room (not saltwater aquarium) The aquarium is about 10 inches width and probably about 12 inches height and i would really like to know what kind of fish i should get for my aquarium? i want to put about 2 or 3 in the aquarium and since i am buying the aquarium and fish with my own money i kinda have a smaller budget so dont make your answers like BIG FANCY FISH PLEASE!!!!!
If your aquarium is 10 inches wide and 12 inches high, that is going to be around 3g tank – that’s pretty small.
You could go with a small group of either neon tetra or cardinal tetra. You have a tiny bit of room for small corydoras species.
I would do:
- 5 neon tetras
- 3 pygmy cories or panda cories.
Both are generally recommended for slightly larger tanks but if you keep up with water changes, you are ok.
Please make sure you do get a filter and a heater.

There are many different kinds of fish you can get, but remember to only get fish that can survive in a non-saltwater environment (the store owner should help you out with that) A normal gold fish isn’t good in such a small tank because they release a lot of waste into the water at a fast rate. You could get a little cat fish that helps keep a tank clean, or a little zebra fish. They are small and fast and fun to watch swim around! Depending on the store you go to and what options you have will make a difference, but there are many options to choose from.

One type I really like is Neon Tetra. They look like they have little batteries turning on a light on their sides. Just beautiful. And they are NOT monsterous in size. So they don’t eat much. Moreover, you do NOT need to get too many of them. (see source below). # or 4 is fine.
Besides looks, should also consider getting some practical "maintenance" critters. Example is some snails that scrub trhe aquarium sides of any algae. Now that is a practical consideration. Sure snails aren’t so much to look at, but neither is algae growing on the sides of the tank.

this is what i would do: get two male guppies (fancy) and two male platty’s. they are both small and inexpensive fish. they are very colorful too. but these are tropical fish… so make sure to get a heater and a thermometer and keep the temp at around 75-80 degress F. you could also get a small bottom feeder to keep the tank cleaner. and still do weekly 10-15% water changes. if you have any questions im sure someone at the petstore could help you or feel free to e-mail me with questions!! (: good luck

I would say the only kind of fish you could put in there is a siamese fighting fish. picture – http://www.bettafish.name/Betta_Fish.jpg (only ONE by the way because they kill each other). If your not going to have a filter in there which you should get if you want your fish to be healthy, then you re going to have to do frequent water changes. Siamese fighting fish need warm water so getting a heater is a good idea. I would not recommend a zebra danio fish as they need a lot of room to swim. Also do not get golfish as they tend to poop alot making cleaning harder plus theyr grow too big for that size tank.

Sounds like your getting a 10 gallon tank. If you are putting a heater in there you can put tetras in there. If your not getting a heater I would recommend just getting goldfish. Please be sure to get your fish from a pet store where they will hopefully know about the fish and be able to give you the right info! Good Luck!!
