what species of aquarium fish are extinct in the wild?

Ive been doing some reading and i found two species of fresh water fish that are extinct in the wild but still exist in home aquariums. the red tailed shark and the butterfly geodid. does anyone know of any others? i want to get some and breed them to ensure thier continued survival at least in some form.

There a all kinds of species that are either endangered or extinct in the wild. Most of the goodeid’s are endangered, a number of the wild swords and platies, cichlids, catfish.. They are all out there. The best place to look and get involved with that is here:

Claudia Dickinson has been working very hard on this site to list all of the endangered species with the help of a number of renowned scientists. The list is updated regularly and you can register there as a participant. Some of the participants might also have fish available for you to propagate and spread among other responsible aquarists to keep the species alive in captivity.

Can a 10 gallon aquarium hold saltwater fish?

Yes, The White Cloud Mountain Minnow or Tanichthys albonubes. Another one is the "Blue Eyed Panaque" a species of Plecostamus. Found another one the Pinstripe Damba, Paretroplus menarambo.
Actually the red lined tropedo barb, is threatened in the wild, but is being bred more and more in captivity. The Indian government in the Kerala state has banned fishing for this species because of the over fishing for export trade.

The red lined tropedo barb. They are very endanger due to there high demand in the fish trade. So if they could breed them in aquariums it might save the wild ones. But they have not had much luck with breeding.

White Cloud Minnows are a good one to start with. I believe they are extinct in the wild, but they are a great little aquarium fish.

They are a species that are easy to breed and you can encourage your friends to keep and breed them too.

Once you get a bit of experience with breeding then you can move on to more exotic species.

But the White Clouds are certainly worth saving.

It’s not a fish, but a common aquarium animal – the dwarf african frog is extinct in the wild, but still alive in well in aquariums across the world.
