I bought an aquarium heater for my betta fish today question PLEASE HELP?

Hi well i bought a betta fish and two mountain minnows about a week ago i didn’t know that the betta was a heat lover so today i bought a aqua heater but since the’ve been in cold water will he suffer shock from cold to warm water? I read on the internet to slowley higher the water temp each day so my betta gets used to it. What should i do? Thanks!

That all depends on the temperature of the room their in and how large their tank is.

My guess is that the tank is small like a 5 or 10 gallon. A heater will slowly heat the water up so it’s very rare that the fish will get shock from the heater. Did you get a thermometer to make sure the water doesn’t get too hot? That’s a very good idea. They’re cheap and easy to read. Especially if you get the ones that stick onto the aquarium glass.

My room is kept at "room temperature", about 20 degrees Celsius. At that temp I really wouldn’t need to use a heater. I had a betta a while ago and he was perfectly happy bossing the shrimp around at room temp. They are tough little guys and can live in puddles, just as long as it doesn’t get too hot. (like over 81 F)

Oh and a little tip. Don’t over feed. Put some food in (i use blood worms and floating pellets) let him eat for about 5 to 10 mins then take out the uneaten food. I used to feed him twice a day. Hope you have fun with him. Good luck

set the temperature to what it should be. It slowly heats up and your fish will be okay.
Set it for 74 -78 degrees.
And leave it alone do not switch it off ever. The heaters have a cut out point. when they need
to heat up again they do, but the water never goes below what is should be.

The optimal range of water temperature for your Betta fish is 74 -78 degrees Fahrenheit. It could go down to 72 degrees or up to 80 degrees and still be o.k., but 80 – 82 degrees is usually used for hospital tanks where you separate out the sick fish and add medication for their specific disease and keep your fish warm and in a more relaxing, tension free situation as much as possible where they can heal more quickly.

Put him in a plastic sandwich bag with water he’s been in and float it in the cooler water until their both about the same temp. Maybe a day.

first keep in mind that the temperature guage on the hearer is more of a reference point rather that an actual temperature setting. so if your tank temp is 70, then set the heater for 72. wait for the temp to reach 72 and raise the temp 1-2 degrees as necessary until you get to about 78-80-ish. (the numbers on the heater and the thermometer may read differently depending on the size of your tank.) betta temperature is between 75-85F.

you see fish cant regulate their own body heat. so its important to slowly raise the temperature gradually. if you just put the heater in and crank it to 80, there is a chance that some of the aquarium will be hotter and the other side colder. stressing the fish as he swims from side to side.

but then again if you just ploped it in he might be fine. but the safest way is the first way i mentioned.

Put the heater in and raise the temp by 2 degrees each day until you get to 28c/78f. However keep an eye on your minnows as they prefer cooler waters. You may want to try to compromise at about 26c if you plan to keep both types of fish.
