Do you have to turn on the aquarium lights during fishless cycling?

Note: I have no live plants in this aquarium.
If it helps, the aquarium is 20 gallons and has a Aquaclear 30 as its filter. There is also no live plants in the aquarium.

Yes, leaving the lights on all the time will help speed up the cycle. Also, if you can stand the sound of falling water, leaving the aquarium a few inches below the filter return and having the cascading water will help speed up the cycle as well. The more surface agitation and cascading water the better for the cycle time. Slightly warmer water also helps.

If you don’t care about speeding up the cycle, leaving the lights off will not harm anything.

Can I put a money plant in my 5g aquarium which has lights?

Well I would recomend it only because if you are preparing your aquarium for fish and running like you would with the fish in it you need everything as close to the same as if the fish were in it as possible. You are supposed to have your light on durring the day and off at night so if you do run it make sure and keep it that way. Any other questions please contact me at [email protected]. Thanks! :)
