how long should I keep my aquarium light on?

Hi, I have a 10 gallon aquarium, and I was wondering how long I should keep the light on (btw. I have freshwater tropical fish)
Do I have to turn in on at night?

That would depend on how bright the room lighting is and how long the tank is exposed to it.
I’d never go past 10-12 hours of light where you can actually see the fish (that doesn’t mean tank lights on)… the tank lighting is more for your benefit than the fishes and most really don’t like bright light they can’t get away from.
If the ambient room light is good enough for viewing through the day, then probably 3-4 hours into the evening hours. If it’s a particularly dark room with not much light,I’d run the tank lights 11 hours and decorate to provide shaded.dimmer, areas for them to take a break.

no you can have them on during day and off at night or on at night and off during the day. i have mine on during the day

Too much light or exposure to natural sunlight will trigger algae problems. Assuming that the lighting is wired separately from the other hardware (i.e filter) then you can plug it into a digital or analogue timer. This should be set so the light is on for around 5-6 hours each day.

The light in your tank is to simulate night and day. It should be on anywhere from 6 to 9 hours. Definately don’t leave it on for over 10.
