I’m thinking about buying a small aquarium tank to buy pet fish. How do I start?

I haven’t had a pet fish before.
What do I need organised and what kind of fish stays around longer if is healthy in a tank?

welcome to the wonderful but money draining world of fish keeping!well as a hobbyist i suggest you go out and buy the biggest tank you can afford but most people start off with a 10-20 gallon fish tank.be warned once buying this tank you gonna use up to about 400 dollars.well first off the tank it self i personally prefer to buy a kit because it includes all you need a heater and filter + a hood or top as some call it and lighting.now from my point of view a 10 gallon fish tank is about 50 dollars give or take a few bucks but i think a 20 gallon would be better it’s about 70 dollars.now decor gravel is recommended nay a must.the rule is about 2 pounds of gravel per 1 gallon of water but i like to use a different rule i only use about 1 pound per gallon a 25 bag of gravel is about 12 bucks.now what you need is plants and lots of them real or plastic is fine.okay first you should rinse the gravel till all is clean and nice add it in the tank.rinse your decor/plants and than arrange them how ever you please.than add water a good method to add water is to use a hose to fill it up.remember your tank needs to be in a place with no sun light and must have a strong base.okay now what you need is water conditioner use a water conditioner call p.h. 7 or what ever it is ask your pet store to help you find a product that is both a conditioner and a p.h. setter.now wait 15 minutes and turn on your filter and heater.wait about 2 days and now run to the pet store buy a fish known as zebra danios buy about 5 now your water should be at 78-82 degree.now wait 6 weeks and go to your pet store ask them what fish can go in your fish tank remember this instructions are only for fresh water fish tanks also fresh water salt may help

Best thing to do first is a whole lot of reasearch. read all about setting up a tank and start with a hardy fish species. You can find out all this sort of info at about.com.

Get a 10 gallon tank and cycle your tank before you buy any fish or else your fish will die and you will probably post questions about why your fish died and stuff. To prevent that, read this article.

Some goood starting fish are danios.
Some good live bearers are guppies but if you buy guppies, you might want to buy just males or just females since they will breed a lot and you will have an overstocked tank under a month or so. Make sure to research every fish you buy so you will know their requirements and how to care for them and if they are compatible with your other fish.

Make sure to buy a good filter, and a heater for tropical fish. Also, have a water test kit around at all times to monitor the levels of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate in your tank because an excess of these things in your tank can lead to dead fish which is why you cycle your tank.

    How small?

a 10 gallon is a good size to start. You can house a few small fish in there.

before I go on, you need to know about the nitrogen cycle. It is very important in the long term health of your fish.
This should explain how to cycle you fish tank without using fish. It is the most humane way. http://badmanstropicalfish.com/articles/article63.html

You will need a filter, air bubblier with a depending size which varies on the size of the tank, and maybe a heater depending on how large your tank is. You also need either gravel or sand for the ground cover and scenery which is optional.
