Aquarium Heaters?

If you have a heater can you just plug it in and put it in your fish(fish tank heater)and it’ll warm the tank?

Yes. But check the package and choose a heater that is designed for the size tank you have, and leave the heater unplugged but fully submerged for 1 hour prior to turning it on, or else it could break or short circuit from the temperature change. Also, put a thermometer on your aquarium and make sure to keep it between 72-82 degrees F. Most heaters are adjustable.

Do aquarium heaters make noise?

They shouldn’t make any noise at all.

Under-Gravel Aquarium Heaters for a 5 Gallon Tank?

I bought a Mini Heater for a 5-10 gallon tank, wattage: 15, dimensions: 6.2 x 2.4"
Increases temperature: approx. 5° F (5 gal)/4° F (10 gal) The difference between the ambient/room temperature and the aquarium temperature reached by using this heater can vary due to location and lighting.

I keep my house rather cool 60° F during the day and the tank only gets up to 65ish which isn’t warm enough. Can anyone reccomend a under-gravel heater for a 5 gallon tank that I can set the temperature or one that keeps the tank more than 5° warmer than room temperature.
Gary C - I was looking for a under-gravel one because the tank isn’t very big and didn’t want the tank to look clutered but if it’s what I need I will buy one.
Would one like this be ok http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753018 50W, 7" long, 5-14 gallons, max temp increase of 14° F

I’ve never tried the undergravel or under-tank heaters.
However, there are immersible heaters (the common kind used by many aquarists) that will work in a 5-gallon tank and have adjustable thermostats.
Look for one with about 15 to 25 watts of power, and be sure the heating tube is short enough to fit in your tank the way you have it set up.

Edit: The one you linked to a picture of should work fine, although 50 watts is probably more power than you need for five gallons. That’s not a problem unless the thermostat gets stuck in the "on" position. Check the temperature a couple of times per day, and you can unplug it or turn it down if the water starts getting too warm.

Do aquarium heaters contain mercury?

I have an aquarium heater in my fish tank and I would like to know whether aquarium heater’s contain any mercury within them.

Modern Aquarium Heaters do not use mercury - the switching mechanism is a bimetalic bar which curls one way when hot - and switches off the heater, and curls the other way when cold and switches on the heater. These movements are very small and well calibrated. No mercury is used.

whats a good aquarium heater that i can get for around 20 bucks?

i need a heater for my aquarium that’s around 20 bucks. or less. as long as its good and durable. my tank is 29 gallons but heater comes in 30 so yeah doesn’t really matter.

Top Fin Aquarium Heater. I only have a 15 gallon tank, but it’s been working very well for years. It should be under 20 bucks…check your local pet stores.

Aquarium Heaters. How often are they actually heating the water?

Pretty general question. Just wanting to find out how often my Aquarium Heaters in my tropical tank are actually heating the water. House temperature is usually 18 C and I have 120 liter tank and keep the temperature at about 27 C. Have a 50 watt and 200 watt heater. Trying to find out how much electricity usage they use a day. Cheers.

ok well, first off the newer generation heaters (going back like the last 10 years lol) have a built in thermometer so your question isnt really to hard to answer. If you set your hear to what 25 degrees…when your water HITS 25 degrees it will turn itself off…then when the thermometer notices that the temperature is dropping it will turn back on. if your outside temp is around the same temp as the tank then it will be on maybe 2 hours in a day if its alot lower than that then all day because it will be struggling to keep your aquariums temp at the same place

I bought an aquarium heater for my betta fish today question PLEASE HELP?

Hi well i bought a betta fish and two mountain minnows about a week ago i didn’t know that the betta was a heat lover so today i bought a aqua heater but since the’ve been in cold water will he suffer shock from cold to warm water? I read on the internet to slowley higher the water temp each day so my betta gets used to it. What should i do? Thanks!

That all depends on the temperature of the room their in and how large their tank is.

My guess is that the tank is small like a 5 or 10 gallon. A heater will slowly heat the water up so it’s very rare that the fish will get shock from the heater. Did you get a thermometer to make sure the water doesn’t get too hot? That’s a very good idea. They’re cheap and easy to read. Especially if you get the ones that stick onto the aquarium glass.

My room is kept at "room temperature", about 20 degrees Celsius. At that temp I really wouldn’t need to use a heater. I had a betta a while ago and he was perfectly happy bossing the shrimp around at room temp. They are tough little guys and can live in puddles, just as long as it doesn’t get too hot. (like over 81 F)

Oh and a little tip. Don’t over feed. Put some food in (i use blood worms and floating pellets) let him eat for about 5 to 10 mins then take out the uneaten food. I used to feed him twice a day. Hope you have fun with him. Good luck
