1. Fish need lights to survive
Regardless of whether you have a fresh water set up or a marine set up your fish will need light in the aquarium to survive. However, sometimes different fish require different kind of lighting and it is better that you ask for advice from the fish accessory shop as to what lighting you should have for your fish.
2. The various kinds of lighting
You could use florescent lighting for fish that are brightly colored as this will make the fish stand out more in the aquarium and give the aquarium a nice effect. You can get these lights in various sizes to suit your aquarium. You will have to buy the light fittings separately as they do not come along with the fish tanks or the hoods for the tanks. This is an expensive part of equipment as you will have to buy the fittings for the lights also.
3. Lighting for marine tanks
Marine tanks need more light and these are more expensive as a lot of pure light is needed here to light up the reefs. Anemones and corals require a lot of light and also sensitivity to live in under these conditions and so light plays an important role in this sort of a marine aquarium. If you are planning on a coral reef make sure that you have adequate light and the correct kind.
4. Where to find aquarium lighting
Aquarium lightings maybe easy to install, but cost quite a bit. You can buy these at any pet shop or fish shop that sells accessories for fish tanks and aquariums too. You could also search for second hand lighting for marine aquariums but always ensure that they are in working condition first or else you will be wasting your money on it.
5. Get good lighting to define your aquarium
To get a good look about your aquarium you should put good lighting and not some cheap kind which will make it look shabby. If your lighting is good then your fish tank will look good and will be worth being put up. You could try out various colors and not just adhere to white for your lighting effects. Try out various colors and see which one you find most suitable for your aquarium and for the type of fish collection that you have in it.

one of my bulbs went out and it says to only use 15 watt in case of fires but they need the light. i have have used a 40 watt bulb in the hood for the past week. just a couple minutes ago while feeding my fish i saw that sticker and started to worry. will my hood be able to handle that or do they just put that on because of the water being near it
If it says 15W then it means it. It’s a fire hazard to use more than what it states on the fixture.
Bulbs 15W and under are cheap. Compare that to the price of the fixture or even your home. Fish do not need light, and even plants will forgive you for a day or two until you can purchase a new bulb.

Right now I have a 55 gallon aquarium, with a large Marineland, hang on filter. The problem is that I have lets say, a top that was meant for a 35 gallon. I’m planning to buy the whole 55 gallon hood, but I’m wondering, on full hoods were does the intake and out take part of the filter go?
On full hoods, there are sections along the back you can cut out to allow space for filters and other equipment.

no not a good idea they are known for jumping right out of the tank …so if you are going to invest the money in discus(not cheep fish) i suggest having a complete tank setup…they require alot more care than most fish …extra filtration, blackwater extract, perfect temp. and ph or you will lose them…they are soo beautiful!! i had three foe several years and lost one …and after that i was sick of the stress…they take so much time…i want fish to relax and so now i have angelfish and rams and things like that….much easier and relaxing but not as beautiful

It’s very wet when I remove the hood and water drips off. Is it normal to have this much condensation? In the winter the entire inside of my hood is wet but in the summer, only the area where my heater is is wet.
It is because the tank is warmer than the room…. increased evaporation rate.Wider the difference between room and tank the faster the rate.
Summertime the evaporation rate above the heater is greatest because this is warmest part of tank (and heat rises) in relationship to room temperature if A/C is on.

I have a 30 Gallon aquarium (125 Liter) I was wondering if i Need a Hood or not?
I have a Lighting unit hanging over my aquarium so do i need a hood?
My Only worry is pollution via Cleaning Products?
is that a problem? or Can I have an Open Top Aquarium?
PLEASE ANSWER!
Yes a hood would be great because:
1. Fish jump, and you never know when. I’ve seen a guppy, zebra danios, cyclid, goldfish etc jump out of tanks in from of my eyes before. Why not protect them?
2. Pollution like you said. Air freshener, cooking’s smoke, bugs, or just dust.. etc… it good to protect
3. I’ve had tanks in a cold house before in winter, with and without hood. The one with hood was able to keep up with the desired temperature much easier. Maybe you’ll save a bit on heat, while keeping temperature more consistent.
4. Water leaves much faster without a hood that traps a bunch of the evaporated water.
5. Hood reduces noise of the water.
7. Much harder to accidentally drop something in it (a rusty screw driver or a can of coke, your laptop…).
