Purchasing a fish aquarium may seem like an easy task however tropical and saltwater fish need special care and attention to live a happy life.

The first thing you will need to decide is whether you plan on keeping fresh water fish or saltwater fish. Generally speaking freshwater fish are a lot easier to keep so if this is your first fish aquarium I would advise a fresh water fish aquarium would be a good place to start.

You will need to make sure you do not add too much food to your fish aquarium, research the type of fish you are keeping before throwing in too much or too little food, adding too much food could be harmful to your tropical fish as they can over eat, also adding to much food could potentially pollute the tank.

Having a balanced diet is essential for aquarium fish, I would recommend that you buy any fish food in small bags or containers rather than bulk buying, this is because over time the vitamin content will gradually decline so to keep your fish food in optimum condition and as fresh as possible buy smaller bags and keep them in a cool dry place.

Anything that is introduced into your fish aquarium should be properly taken care of and monitored, it is important to keep the water in the tank clean by checking for parasites, fungi and bacteria.

Although maintaining a fish aquarium is an ongoing task certain fish can lighten the load, it is well worth investing in fish that scavenge as they will clean the tank for you however it is vital to research the type of fish you buy to ascertain if they can live peacefully with the other fish residing within your tank.

It may be a good idea to create yourself a daily monthly and weekly ‘to do’ list so you can be sure that you have made all the necessary checks on the temperature control, lighting and feeding.

Toxic and harmful products can be caused by the breakdown of protein, investing in a protein skimmer can be extremely effective, a protein skimmer will remove impurities and residue from the aquarium and will purify the water.

Never keep your tank in direct sunlight, this will increase the growth of green algae making your tank unattractive and hard to see into. Having a fish tank in direct sunlight will also cause the water temperature to rise making it harder to control

The bigger the fish aquarium the easier it ill be to maintain a stable water temperature, having a larger tank will also give your fish more room to move, it is also very important to give them lots of places to hide, believe it or not the more places they have to hide the less they will hide.

If you can keep on top of the maintenance then you are sure to have a clean and happy tank.

Saltwater enthusiast have developed a love affair with coral reefs. There is nothing they love better then to design, stock and maintain a saltwater aquarium that is teaming with coral.

For years only the most adventurous were brave enough to tackle the challenges proposed by a reef saltwater aquarium. Until recently coral reef was notoriously hard to maintain.

Times have changed. Now there are several varieties of coral that even the most novice saltwater aquarium owner can enjoy.
The key to successfully maintaining a reef saltwater aquarium is to have your saltwater reef aquarium properly set up.

The first thing you’ll want to find is a tank. Select the largest possible tank that you feel comfortable with. The greater the size of your tank, the greater the water mass encompassing the reef, and the more you will be able to duplicate the effects of the ocean. You can choose either the classic look of a glass aquarium or you can select an acrylic tank which gives you a larger variety of shapes and styles. Acrylic tanks are also more durable then glass tanks. Make sure that there is absolutely no copper anywhere in the tank. Copper has a lethal affect on coral.

Before adding the coral to your tank make sure that the temperature of your water stays consistent. The temperature should remain at 23-25 degrees Celsius (73-77 degrees Fahrenheit). Your coral will remain healthier in water that is always at the same temperature.

It is very important that your reef saltwater aquarium be properly filtered. The three types of filters are mechanical, biological, and chemical.

A mechanical filter is a filter made out of spun nylon floss. Mechanical filter trap and remove wasteful material and prevent your chemical and biological filters from becoming clogged. Â Â Â There are a variety of biological filters. Some use the tanks aquarium substrate as a part of the filtration system. The purpose of biological filters is to contain the biochemical properties and to break down waste products.

Chemical filters absorbs the ions of dissolved waste. Chemical filters are typically based on active carbon.

Many reef saltwater aquarium owners like to use other products such as Bioballs and Protein Skimmers to assist with their filtration system.

The PH level of a reef saltwater aquarium should hold steady at 8.2.

Coral reefs require a filtration system that circulates the tanks water. Moving water tends to be rich in oxygen and the currents carry food to the invertebrates living inside the immobile coral. A submersible pump will do wonders to increase the water flow in a saltwater aquarium.

When you decide that it is time to stock your reef saltwater aquarium with fish you need to remember a few things before rushing out to your favorite fish store.

Bear in mind that just because a variety of fish lives in the ocean does not automatically mean that it’s compatible with coral. Some fish eat the invertebrates that make the coral reef their home. Some fish produce waste that is toxic to the coral. Some fish, like Blow-fish, produce a toxin when they die that can kill every living organism in your aquarium.

The aquarium tank has to be chosen with great care. You cannot buy the tank just on your whim. It has to be suitable for what you are planning to buy and put inside the tank. The tanks may be used for various purposes, you can decorate them, add fish to them and add amphibians and corals. These are different things and might need differing tanks as well with different elements in the tank. Fish is comparatively easy to keep, corals are rather hard.

Corals require an aquarium with the marine kind of set up, so the usage of salt water is a must. The lighting has to be intense and the salt content has to be at 0.7 which is the normal level for corals and fishes that need hard water. Corals are extremely beautiful looking rocks, with various colours and different types, they are a kind of anemones. Anemones resemble little fingers that are sitting on rocks or plants and the sight is simply great to look at. Saltwater fishes can also be added to these tanks with corals.

Amphibians on the other hand are easier to care for and all they require is a normal amount of water and other elements that are associated with their natural habitats. Some of them like snakes and turtles need baths and this can be provided. Make sure you provide enough space for free movement for the fishes and others they need to be able to move and play around comfortably without the risk of becoming disfigured and growing problems.

Fishes are the easiest to be kept in the tank environment and they require water to be filled to the full. Proper lighting, heater and filter equipments are needed. You can put different types of fishes in the tank but the may require different elements in the tank. Hence you need to ensure the tank suits the type of fish you intend to keep.

Aquariums are the vital part of the tanks set up. You have to ensure that the tank and animal type suit each other. If this is not done then the fishes will not live for long. Because the tanks are very costly they are made to be safe through the usage of safety glass so that you will not have breakage problems.

Aquariums need certain accessories as fish need them to survive , as if they were like a heater and a filter. Fish like amphibians need plenty of light and heat so it is essential to provide them both in an aquarium. Make your tank look and function naturally- this is not as complicated or expensive as it may sound.

Every aquarium needs heat, light and a good water filter. To keep the water in the aquarium clean and the fish alive a good filter is necessary as it helps to suck the dirty water from the bottom and have it recycled into fresh clean water. This is the most common type of filtration process used in all aquariums
except in tanks which have salt water. In this case there is an external sump tank where all the filtration process is done. You can find filters at any pet shop. Yo should also be able to buy a good filter for a nice deal when you are purchasing your fish tank or aquarium itself. Filtration is a very important process because it keeps the water clean and hence the fish are less prone to be attacked by disease or sickness, or just die due to lack of breathable oxygen!

Keeping the water at a constant temperature is another important thing and for this heaters are required. For this you need to have a heater which can be used in an aquarium and set at the required temperature. Maintain the water at an ideal temperature of 25 or 26 degrees Fahrenheit as fish will die if the water is too hot or cold. Heaters come in all sizes and voltages and you can choose one which is ideal from a pet shop. You will need a more powerful heater if you have a big tank. Fish are actually very fussy about the temperature of the water they are swimming in. Temperature actually helps the fish to determine the season and breeding grounds etc, in nature. Therefore it is extremely vital to get a temperature regulator or a water heater to keep your fish comfortable. However, always take caution while setting the temperatures as extreme temperatures wil kill your fish.

Many people think that corals and anemones are plants but actually they are living creatures which need plenty of light. The lights need to be powerful and so can be expensive. You can buy them at exclusive light shops only and not at most fish shops. You can buy them from someone who is disposing of them or you can order new ones.

If you have recently purchased your aquarium from a pet shop chances are that the system was fully set up for you. Such an aquarium will in all probability be self sufficient and can take care of itself for extended periods of time. However, it is important to know how to take care of your aquarium manually too. It is important to keep a tab on the water conditions of the aquarium. The type of fish you keep in the tank as well as the kind and quantity of water plants in the tank play an important role in keeping the water clean and the fish healthy.

Many tropical fish are used to living in softwater, tetras for example thrive in rain water. This means that the water has got to be as near to purity as possible. This is why it is important to get a hold of a hydrometer to test the hardness of the tank water frequently. This is easily available from any fish store. If you find that the water is getting hard it is best that you add some fresh water to the tank at regular intervals after removing some of the out of the tank.

So how do you go about avoiding the hardening of water?
First of all do not use limestone as a lining at the bottom of the tank. This is a sure way of hardening the water and is a resort used in saltwater tanks. Regularly test the water for hardness as explained above. Add fresh water to the tank to soften the water regularly. When you notice white deposits on the aquarium glass it is an indication that the water is hardening. While testing the pH of the water with a hydrometer remember that the natural level of the pH is 7. Try to maintain this level.

Try not to keep the aquarium too crowded with aquatic plants. Fish need freedom to dart around or cruise and the plants do tend to get in their way. besides this you cannot enjoy the full pleasure of the fish as the plants tend to hide them from view.

Keep the temperature of the water at 20 degrees. This is a comfortable level and the fish will stay healthy and lively. There are automatic heaters available at the local pet store and you can get yourself a handy one at a very reasonable price. These heaters are set to maintain the temperature of the water automatically so you do not have to worry.

You must also get your tank a water filter. This is a pumping mechanism that sucks water into the tank and sends it through a membrane filter. It cleans the water very effectively and needs to be manually cleaned with boiled water at regular intervals like once in 6 weeks. Remember not to over clean the filter as the bacteria on it is important. this bacteria helps in cleaning the water of fish excreta.

The water filter serves two other important purposes as well. It circulates the water in the tank and splashes the surface of the water constantly allowing the water to absorb oxygen.

If you have all this in your tank and you know know to take care of the instruments your fish will be happier, healthier and your tank will look good longer.

Among the various types of freshwater fish, Rosy barbs, Tiger barbs, Sumatra barbs and Red Barbs are easiest to maintain and breed. However, it is advisable to place the larger barbs with fish of similar size. In communal tanks, trouble is stirred up by the larger barbs and they also uproot the fancy plants. They are more attention seeking than the smaller barbs and therefore, they should be separated and grouped.

Ceylon is the origin of the Purple Head Barbs and the Black Ruby. The fish do well in communal tanks and grow to about 2 1/2 inches. The female barbs are yellow-gray with dark stripes running in blotches and vertical lines. They lend colorful environments to the aquarium. The male barbs are brownish-black in color and/or black with vermilion red frontals. This fish lives well in communal waters, unlike the boisterous Puntius Conchonius groups. This fish feasts on all foodstuffs and is not finicky. It is also not demanding when it comes to water conditions and will survive even in moderately hard neutral waters. This is an easier fish to breed like the Puntius. The barb spawns like other barbs and lays about 300 eggs.

The Sumatra and the Tiger Barb belong to the Capoeta Tetrazona species, which originates from Sumatra and Borneo. Their size is about 2 inches when fully grown. This is a colorful fish with reddish-yellow bodies with a wide variety of black stripes. Its attitude is changeable which is the reason for its being the most diverse fish in the market. Some people are of the opinion that this fish bullies other fish, nipping at their fins, while other people feel that they have a calm disposition.

The Sumatra and Tiger fish share the same water condition needs as other barbs. The Sumatra and Tiger Barbs flourish in impartial or practical alkalinity water, as also in hard water. Fish owners are advised to set the temperatures at 78 degrees Fahrenheit. The Sumatra and Tiger fish will crave and eat all foodstuffs heartily. All barbs spawn healthily and they are the first choice of breeders.

The male Sumatra and Tiger fish are slim and colorful while the female species are plump. The female are simple and breed like other barbs. The fry are however susceptible to bladder problems and tend to rot at the fins. The water then has to be extremely spotless and should be monitored very carefully during breeding, as the spawn of the Sumatra and Tiger fish is gnawed at by the mutants.

Ceylon is the origin of Capoeta Titteya fish or Cherry Barbs, which are about 2 inches in length. The fish have a red-brown or yellow-brown color and are outstanding by their top to bottom dark black stripes. This is a communal fish and need the same water and feeding conditions like those of other barbs. Male counterparts of Capoeta Titteya are of dark colors and change colors when bred. They are usually cherry red and black, with stripes that virtually evaporate.

Breeding of the Cherry Barbs is similar to the breeding of other barbs and they spawn nearly 200 eggs. There is variety in Cherry Barbs, with some barbs feasting on their own kind, while others refraining from it.

You should have a look at the line of Harlequins if you are a novice to aquariums and fish care and are new to the hobby.

I was just wondering if anyone knows if you can put just normal decorations in saltwater tank like pirate ships or whatever, i know live rock is really a must have and i have seen fake corals and plants, just curiuous…
I have the marine tanks and the thought crossed my mind only because it would be different, anyways thanks for the comments and i dont hink ill be adding a pirate ship to my reef any time soon…

Because most people who are serious enough to get into reef tanks are serious enough to enjoy the natural beauty of the tank, and not try to throw a bunch of fake things into it. The same goes with the planted tank community.

A lot of people when they first get into the hobby enjoy the pirate ships and palm trees and skull/crossbones, and sunken submarines with bubbles that come out of them. But a lot of people hit a point where they realize "this is stupid…what’s so wrong with something more natural?"

I go through quite a bit of trouble to ensure that my tanks is as natural as possible. Everything is real in it, and it’s modeled after photos and video of the particular habitat I’m trying to emulate. With reefs, people can go through just as much trouble, and far more expense, to enjoy a slice of the ocean in their tank, to bring a bit of nature home…which, doesn’t usually include plastic miniature sunken ships and fake broken jugs.

Now, there is something to be said about some people who purposefully use man-made objects to demonstrate our impact on the environment. But rather than replicas, these tanks use actual bricks, bottles, etc. The tanks can be quite nice, but not my thing.

Saltwater Aquariums are a source of pleasure in many homes, and young and old people alike love to watch them. These tanks show us a wonderful glimpse of what life is like under the surface of the ocean. There is quite a variety of life that can survive in an aquarium. Plants and fishes are not the only life forms that live in the sea, so why restrict your aquarium by using these two categories alone, to beautify it?

Artificial oysters are common as a release for air bubbles in many aquariums - the oyster opens to let the bubbles out. But with more and more people trying to recreate the ocean floor with their saltwater aquariums, Pearl producing oysters are a special treat for those with home saltwater aquariums. However it is their lesser cousins you will normally find in home aquariums, and understandably so. Did you know that if you place an oyster or a scallop in your tank, they will require more care than any other life form in the aquarium? It is vital that you realize that before you get one for the tank. It is such a let down to see people spend good money on oysters, and later realizing they have bit off more than they can chew on.

Oysters demand a very special water condition. They are not for those of us who are a bit lazy when it comes to maintaining a clean aquarium. Keep in mind, they will not live very long if your tank gets dirt in it often - oysters need cleanliness and care. Nature has a nice way of dealing with this issue - oysters do clean out the water so they can balance the effect, but they can do it only up to a point and no more before it takes its toll on them. Did you know you will have to take special care of their diet as well? Don’t say we didn’t warn you! You need to feed every oyster separately through their pipette upstream. Here it is vital to note - keep the number of oysters in your aquarium minimum, unless you want to spend your entire day feeding them! You will need to give them nutrition supplements as well as a microscopic amount of plankton to keep them healthy.

Some varieties of oyster can survive more often in artificial environments than others. So if you are new at this, go for one of these. You could go for the more delicate ones once you are sure of your self. You will often see varieties like the spiny and the thorny in aquariums. These are such accurate names for these beautiful creations of nature. I bet this article has got you interested in getting an oyster into your saltwater aquarium. Why not visit your local store to see what they have available?
