A question about saltwater aquariums?
I noticed my saltwater aquarium seems to be getting a lot of algae build up lately and i have to clean the tank almost every other day, is there a way to prevent algae from building up like that? I know there are algae eaters and algae pills i can use but is it something with the water, or how can i fix this?
If you have a metal halide light, then that might be encouraging fast algae growth rate. If not, you may need to clean the filter out really well, and possibly turn the light off for an hour in the middle of the day.
Some fish you might try to eliminate the problem would be a lawnmower blenny (they like hair algae) and a coral beauty angel fish (eats algae off of live rock). You could also try some filter feeders, like clams or scallops.

If you put your take near the sunlight,it will grow more faster.
Use a sponge and a filter.
Wipe the algae with the sponge and the filter will filter the dirty things that are in the tank.

If its red algae you need to test your phosphate levels. Red algae is usually caused by high levels of phosphates in your water. They sell the drop tests at your local petstore. If you can't find it there look in a Pond and Aquascaping store.

to the above, well high phosphates will cause a bloom in all algeas…
im a fan of fixing the problem not treating the symptoms (unlike the US health care system, HI-OH!!

but seriously… how old is this tank? almost every new tank undergoes a few months of pretty much out of control algea.. every tank i've owned has had bad-azz algea blooms for about the first 6 months.. after this time they seem to settle down abd be able to keep things in check by themselves..
that's one of the things you have to remember about most marine tanks, they are mini-ecosystems. they go through the swings and highs that ecosystem would..
but to treat the algea as of now.. it would help to know what type of algea it is.. hair algea? film algea? is it red? brown green? bubble algea? calurpa?
different things can be done to prevent certain types from taking over, but there is really no one answer for all types…

algea will grow it is part of the salt water environment. But you can controll what grows and where. Do you have any type of macro algea? Get som chaetomorpha or another type of macro aglea and let it grow in your sump if you have on. Or in the main tank but you will need to watch it and keep it under control. the idea is let the good algea use the nutrients before that junky hair algea can. It has worked great for me. Besides macro gives a great place for pods to grow.

If you have the money, I would recommend buying or investing in a UV Sterilizer. It does work, because I've had my fish tanks for awhile now and ever since I got a UV Sterilizer it works well, even if my fish tank is in front of the window and sun light does hit it, the UV Sterilizer kills off any algae blooms. Thanks for asking………………
