owners of blue hippo tangs 4 saltwater aquariums?
Feb 24
what size tank do you have your blue hippo tang in, and how is it doing?..
I have mine in a 150 gal and She likes to roam all over the tank. Some sites on the Internet state that a 40 gallon is ok, I would dispute that statement just simply because these are not a stationary or almost stationary fish like clowns, gobeys, hawks etc. Tangs like to run around the tank so I would say the other sites that list the minimum size at a 70 are more accurate. I also believe that they should be a long tank and not a hexagon or round tank so they have the freedom of movement.
I’ve had my hippo tang for 2.5 years and haven’t had a problem with her, other than an occational ICH outbreak.

Just remember saltwater isn’t like fresh for obvious reasons.
One being salty, the other not. How does this play a role? Salt is more dense and therefore doesn’t hold oxygen as efficient as fresh. So be sure you have plenty of powerheads, etc to move the water and aerate.
next, frsh goes by this standard. 1" of fish / 1gal of water. Does this make sense? so in a 10gal that is set up correctly you can have 10 (1" fish)….
Okay?
For salt its greater. You can only put 1" of fish per 5 gallons of water.
So the example again, 5 ( 1"in fish) in a 10gal salt.
But starting a 10gal salt is inrealsitc for a beginner. Its too unstable and will crash and kill everything in it.
The larger the salt water volume the better. I like a 60gal for a starter saltie.
before you start in the blue hippos, learn the basics first with regual salties that are a bit more hardy.
As far as what size tank. They do better in LARGE aquariums. Also, make sure your tank is ESTABLISHED. You can’t put in in without it being aged. You’ll kill the fish. My water is 2yrs old so mine is a stable environment. wait at least 2-3mo before you start putting certain "sensitive" fish in.
Its also an excellent idea to buy some live rock, and run the salt aquarium for a month with nothing in it. Just the live sand and live rock. If you don’t know what I am talking about, call a saltie shop.
I also recommend you go to http://www.reefcentral.com Its the LARGEST saltwater site on the net and do you reading first as you’ll piss them off as you questions have been asked on a daily basis so use the search.
Go there and grab a beer and read. You’ll be there a while learning…
