What is the best filtration for a 125 gallon aquarium? (Saltwater)?

I am starting another SW aqaurium soon it will be a 125 gallon aquarium, I want to know what type of filtration is best? Also send links, for protein skimmers, filters, light, anything! How much live rock will I need? How many powerheads, what type? What should I be expecting to pay for JUST the aquarium and stand? Are overflows the way to go??? Also do over flows need to be built in from the factory or can you buy one to just insert? I will probably start out with a F-O-W-L-R system first then slowly go into reefs. What are the best products? I have had Saltwater Aquariums so I am not clueless on this subject, but I have never had one this size. Any help would be great!

The best filtration for a tank that size is a high powered skimmer. You should decide now if You want to do a FOWLR or Reef. That will make a substantial difference on the equipment you should buy. I have a 310 gallon reef, a 200 gallon FOWLR. and no matter which one you do i would go with a over flow into a sump, that makes things much simpler for a tank that size, you will probably have to on a tank that size anyways.

The best thing to do is to log on to www.reefcentral.com and make a log in a start researching there, that is the best thing to do for a new hobbyist. You will find everything you need to know there and it is for the most part very reliable accurate information.

Good Luck

Sump filtration is best. 1.5 pounds of live rock per gallon is generally the rule of thumb. Get holes drilled into your tank so you can prevent powerheads unless you like the look. the tank and stand can be expensive. I got mine cheap from fishtankfactory.com Overflows are the way to go. I think it’s best to get it from the factory (bulkhead holes and overflow box). If you want to someday go coral get the stuff that will support coral. unnecessary upgrades cost a lot of money. Remember cheap things aren’t always good and good things aren’t always cheap. Be ready to spend a lot
